I hear you. I applied for a Gold AMEX Card and was approved in April 2009. I have an excellent credit score (730+). While on travel abroad, AMEX cancelled the card without giving me any notice in May 2009. I was stuck on travel with no way to pay for expenses. Reason for the cancellation - too much debt. I've got an AmEX with a $2500 limit that I have never used. Not sure how you got one with a $500 limit. Don't plan to use the card anyway, I only got it to 'offset' my available credit back when I cared about my credit score. Guess the company better take care of your costs up front. I have an astronomical $11,000 credit limit on mine- ridiculous. That's about $10,200 less than I realistically use every month. Stupid.
