Windows 8 is Horrible!

Since Hurricane Sandy is hitting the New York area our client decided we could work remotely this week. Since I don't have a lot of work to do today, I though I'd give the new Microsoft Windows 8 operating system a try. The install was quick and easy but after that the whole experience was horrible. The new system is not user friendly, it is very frustrating to use and navigate. To make things worse, they got rid of the Start button, really?!

Here, watch this video and you'll get a hint. Even a 12 year old has trouble using Windows 8. All I can say is stay away from Windows 8 for now...

Microsoft- what the F were you thinking?

iPhone 5 Out of Stock!

We are ready to upgrade to the new and cool iPhone 5 but I can't find them anywhere. I check a couple of Apple stores, no luck and our carrier AT&T is also out of stock everywhere... how can a phone be so popular when there's soo many crappy Android phones in the market?

The good news is that I already have a buyer lined up for our old phones. One of my friends wants to buy both of our iPhone 4's for $500. I know I can probably get a bit more on eBay but then I would have to pay for shipping and eBay commissions so I think I will take cash from friend and have free upgrades but we're stuck with old iPhones until I can find the iPhone 5!

Personal Time Off

As we near the end of the year I decided to take a look and see how much vacation I have left. Vacation in our company is known as Personal Time Off or abbreviated as PTO. We currently get 5 weeks of vacation per year and also 10 paid holidays and 1 floating holiday. My balance as of this morning is exactly 6 weeks:

What surprised me the most on my paycheck stub was the amount of vacation I've already taken this year. This is not counting a week I took off for parental leave or the 30 days I spent at home in September while I was looking for work:

Looks like I've worked 1,488 hours (37 weeks) so far this year but I've already taken 192 hours which is  almost 5 weeks of vacation for the year. I also got an extra day off as a floating holiday. We still have Thanksgiving and the holiday season ahead so I'm sure I will be well over 7 weeks of vacation for the year. The good thing is we still have some paid holidays ahead and I will continue to accrue days as the year ends.

What's your vacation like?

Credit Card Travel Expenses

It has been 3 weeks since I started working in Manhattan and somehow I've managed to spend $402 dollars all by myself. Keep in mind this is mainly eating out and going out to bars. I try to post as many details as possible on my blog so here we go, below you can find all the places I charged my Citi card, places where I eat  and the bars I frequent. The nice thing about the client is they do have a lot of paid happy hours so that's when I really order the fancy food and drinks.

Here are all my NYC expenses, this would be a total of 9 full days and 3 half days there:

The good news? The per dime rate is a little bit over $50 so all these expense are paid for but I still need to cut back on things. $402 is way too much money for one person to spend in such a short period of time.

I should probably do a post about our Houston spending, things at home are also out of control. I still don't understand how most people do it, perhaps I need to stick to a better budget...

Have a good weekend!

Selling Stuff on eBay

As some of you know, I love eBay and I'm always buying and selling stuff. This month I'm almost up to $600  in sales! With the eBay mobile app, I'm on the site 24/7. I buy a lot of stuff like watches and sunglasses and resell them. A lot of people on eBay just want to get rid of stuff and often don't describe their items very well. I buy a lot of these items, clean them up, take better pictures, add better descriptions and I often make a small profit of $30 to $40 after I post them back on eBay. Here's my total for this month:

My best sale a few months back was a vintage Omega watch. I picked up the item for $700 and realized it was worth way more. I posted it back on eBay and it sold for $1,600 and the buyer was happy:

Keep in mind that watch was in bad condition but that same watch in excellent condition is worth $6,000 so I'm sure that buyer will probably resell it for more, anyways look around your house, I bet you have a lot of stuff to sell!

Living In New York City

I'm still traveling to New York City every week. I arrive on Monday mornings and leave on Thursday afternoons. I stay on the East side of Manhattan and my office is located next to the Chrysler building. I love that I can walk anywhere and I have a CVS pharmacy right outside my office.

This is the view from my office, I'm actually not looking at the Chrysler building but if turn around I can see it:

Up close view of the Chrysler building:

I have a little deli right outside my office, I can get a decent lunch with a bottle of water for $7 and they also have breakfast:

I'm only only two blocks away from Grand Central station, simply amazing:

I love this city but it is very very expensive. My hotel alone is $300 a night, added up weekly, that's almost what our mortgage is per month. I see so many people on the streets and bars, restaurants and coffee shops are always packed, I have to wonder how do they do it? How can people afford to live and play here?

That's all for now, stay tuned for another post about crazy expenses next week :) I seem to be charging everything while traveling and it's adding up fast.

American Express Serve Free $25

If you have an American Express Serve account (similar to PayPal), be on the lookout for new cards coming in the mail and also a free $25.00 credit when you fund your account with $25.00. I got the email this week but it had actually gone to my Spam account, good thing I found it. This is what it looks like:

This service should be seen as an option in your friendly merchant account provider. Not bad, $25 is not much but a free $25 is always nice and with this new American Express card, the money can be used anywhere that Amex is accepted.
