Personal Time Off

As we near the end of the year I decided to take a look and see how much vacation I have left. Vacation in our company is known as Personal Time Off or abbreviated as PTO. We currently get 5 weeks of vacation per year and also 10 paid holidays and 1 floating holiday. My balance as of this morning is exactly 6 weeks:

What surprised me the most on my paycheck stub was the amount of vacation I've already taken this year. This is not counting a week I took off for parental leave or the 30 days I spent at home in September while I was looking for work:

Looks like I've worked 1,488 hours (37 weeks) so far this year but I've already taken 192 hours which is  almost 5 weeks of vacation for the year. I also got an extra day off as a floating holiday. We still have Thanksgiving and the holiday season ahead so I'm sure I will be well over 7 weeks of vacation for the year. The good thing is we still have some paid holidays ahead and I will continue to accrue days as the year ends.

What's your vacation like?

  1. You should really feel blessed and thankful. That's a LOT of PTO. My company only offers 1 week after 1 year, 2 weeks after 2 years, 3 weeks after 6 years. With no carry over, no sick time, no other time of PTO and 8 holidays.

  4. A thought: Do you have the option to sell back some of your time off to the company? DH usually has a week or so left at the end of the year. He pockets the money from it, which is usually used to help fund our next year's vacation.

A little windfall like that could pay off some debt.

  5. I wish! no we can't sell it, the only way to cash in on it is to leave the firm :( and only up to 6 weeks.
