2011 Taxes and Refund

This morning I filed our taxes for 2011. This year I decided to stick with TaxAct.com which we've used since 2001. The nice thing is they have all our information on file so filing only takes 20 minutes. I can also compare the numbers with last year and prevent any errors for this year. They charged me $9.95 to E-file. I swear it used to be free with them but it's still better than paying $40 or more for Turbo Tax or higher fees with H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt.

As soon as I E-filed I got the confirmation in my inbox that our Federal Electronic Return was accepted by the IRS:

Our refund amount this year was $1,989 dollars. All of this money will go to our savings account and be called the 'Baby Emergency Fund'. I want at least $2,000 dollars in cash for the next few months in case we have any baby related emergencies or hospital bills to pay.

I also plan to have Best Buy paid off the first week of March. The goal is to only have one credit card account,  that should make it easier to pay off all our credit card debt in the coming months.

How much was your refund this year?

Ours was about $1,500 refunded from the fed and about $1,700 owed to the state. With an additional penalty of $130 to the state for under-withholding. Boo, hiss....

We were thrilled that we were getting back $202. Every year for the past 4 years we have owed, sometimes upwards of $7,000. We have finally found our balance where we don't owe much or get much back.

I'm not sure yet because I'm still waiting for one of my T4's to come in from an employer, but I'm expecting about $2400.

I'm going to put $1000 on my student loan, $1000 towards my vacation to Africa in July and the remaining I'm just going to spend!

Combined about $3,900.

TaxAct is still free. You only have to pay the $9.95 if you want them to fill in all of your info and do things like that. For free I don't mind entering it. LOL

No refund this year. Not thrilled with that! I actually have to pay this year. Ugh.

Congrats on the nice refund!

Mine is a little over $1000. Actually it should have been direct deposited this week; I probably need to check on that. Mine is going straight into savings.

I like the idea of a baby emergency fund. :) I used most of mine toward my student loan and put the rest in my Europe fund.

I actually got back about $5,000 from my federal.

I tithed on it.
Gave a family gift to my sponsor child in Africa's family.
Put $1,200 aside for my furnace repair.
Put $400 aside for my life insurance bill.
Paid off my MasterCard ($750.)
Paid off my Kohl's charge ($200.)
Paid my Feb. taxes ($1,200.)
Paid all my other bills to current.
Bought my oldest a sweatshirt, 2 t-shirts, a poster, & belt.
Bought my youngest a t-shirt (he has so many clothes, where my oldest has almost none.)
I wish I had paid all my debt, but I still have about $325 left (plus my mortgage.)

Feels good to have all my bills caught up and know I am getting my furnance fixed.

I am getting about $1,000 from state; going to put this in an emergency fund.
