I Hate Drug Companies

We ran out of some fertility medications last night so we called the pharmacy to get a refill. The pharmacy operates over the phone and they informed us that our insurance is maxed out when it comes to the fertility medication we need. At first I was OK with paying for it out of pocket until I saw the prices below:

Seriously?! who can afford this stuff??? we need 3 of these cartridges which are about the size of a perfume sample. WOW! that's all I can say! Well I can also say I hate all drug companies. I swear if feels like abuse. Why do they need to charge so much for these medications? I feel worse for the people who pay out of pocket for IVF treatments.

The good news- the pharmacy found a work a round and they will also cover the $125 copay and the overnight shipping costs... TG!

So glad you got that covered. Once I had to pay $300 out of pocket for my son's meds, but almost $3,000 yikes.

I would shop around if you decide to do this again. I paid about $450 a vile for the same med. Also, check if you have a mail order plan where you can order a "90 day" supply....if you can get it covered this way, you pay one co-pay for enough for 3 cycles.

Mysti, this is probably it... we are done with all this fertility stuff, not worth it to us and $450 still a lot of money...

Keep a positive attitude for sure. You have a 30% chance of it WORKING. And then you will have a BABY! And then it will all be worth it.

On the cost side of things... do you have savings? Because I hate to tell you, but when you DO get pregnant, the actual child can cost a lot of money. It would help to have some in savings so that if you have a $1500 unexpected expense, you can use the savings from the emergency fund. Because that's what it would be there for.

Other than that my friend, I suggest Prayer. And remember that you ARE still really young. I know you said you just turned 32. Is your wife around your age? If so, you have time. You never know, you may decide to rest on the fertility meds to save up more money, and you might get pregnant on your own! I DO believe in miracles.

Hey Jess!

We always keep $1,000 dollars in our emergency fund, believe it or not that number was actually 10,000back in 2009... but yes if there's a child on the horizon, I will set aside at least $1,500 just for the baby.

The spouse will be 31 this year and yes! I do believe in miracles.

Well, I know all kinds of people with all kinds of birth stories. Some tried for several years. Lots of my friends didnt' even get married until their early to mid thirties, and then waited a few years to have kids. You are both still young and have time. Keep the faith!

I got some meds at a lower cost through Walmart's specialty pharmacy. You have to fill in some paperwork but it was quite a bit less. Plus some fertility-related meds like estradiol is also used for other illnesses so it's part of walmart's generic drug program. I had zero insurance coverage for ivf meds. I think we spent $5000 on meds alone.

Can you see why the health care system is so out of control? The medicines you are taking have always been that expensive, you just didn't know or care until you thought you were going to have to pay for them. I think if people were more aware of how much their medical care cost they would be absolutely shocked!

BTW, not faulting you for using fertility drugs or anything, just noting that most of us are blissfully unaware of the true costs of our medications.

I find medication costs can be quite outrageous.

My 6 yr old daughter has a medical condition. The medication that will best control her symptoms currently costs between $3000-4000 per MONTH! She's still too young to take it (won't be able to take it till she's 12 or 13), hopefully by then it won't be so expensive as the patents will have expired.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do about the IVF meds.

Do not have a child until you are completely out of debt (except for a house mortgage), have enough saved to pay any medical bills, an emergency fund and can live on your salary alone. Otherwise you will end up like a lot of PF bloggers...duh what happened?
