My wife is a elementary school teacher at a public school district. The district she teaches at like most school districts across the nation is facing a budget shortfall. She's got some seniority but her contract could be terminated at the end of the school year. If we lose her income, we might as well lose everything else. I don't think she can find another teaching job in the fall and I doubt she could find any other type of work and make the same money.
My job is also in jeopardy. I have 10 people coming from offshore to take over and do most of my tasks. The goal is for them to go back and take all my knowledge so we can pay them $6,000 per year to do the same work. Most people don't realize how bad things are getting out there. I can personally say we can't be heading in the right direction as a nation. Last weekend I met a NURSE (the alcohol post) who was just laid off at her job from a major hospital in the Houston area. Keep in mind nurses are supposed to be in high demand for the next 20 years. I'm sure she will find a job but do you see a pattern here? I was thinking about going in to health care but now I'm having doubts.
So that's the title for this post- our jobs are under attack. The Texas legislature will cut funding for schools so that could impact my wife's job. My job could go due all the 'free trade' policies we hear are so good for Americans.
So what's your take? Is your job safe? Are we heading in the right direction?

Oh my. I'm sorry to hear this. You must be very stressed.
I'm pretty fortunate that my job is secure - at least compared to the jobs of my friends and family members. Believe it or not, I have decent seniority in my department (high turnover at my school) and budget cuts haven't been as severe in my area as in other parts of the country.
Perhaps your wife could get a dual certification in a high-need area, like ESL or special education. Also, she could make decent money substituting on a regular basis if worse comes to worse.
I hope things start looking up soon :)
Teacher! glad to hear you are safe over there! She already has her ESL cert but special does not appeal to her. She does mentor a couple of SE kids a few days per week, principals love that kind of stuff.

I'm sorry to hear this. Start putting any extra cash away now. Don't delay. If everything works out fine, then you will have all that extra money! I'll be routing for you!!
Wow.. I am sorry to hear this. However, think of this as a wake up call. Maybe NOW you will realize how important it is to be financially responsible and to curb your spending, for if you both loose your jobs, will you be able to survive? Can you sacrifice your trips, the shopping, the alcohol to survive?
You think positive and be optimistic (i know it's harder than it sounds). Sometimes that's the only thing you can do. But like Sharon said, don't delay..start putting away extra cash.
Yikes. Not good. Perhaps your wife could go private and teach classes out of your home depending on her expertise. Art? Science? Music?
I teach my kids at home and there is always a demand in the homeschool world for outsourcing things we don't feel like teaching (or we're not good at teaching). Math, physics, etc.
Hope your job stays safe and hers!
My job as a wife is pretty safe at the moment. I haven't heard any rumors and at least I'm not training someone to do my job for me. That would be awkward. And yes, that really was me in 2004. Not proud of it but it's true.
Yep - my work was in jeopardy too, but I think it all worked out in the end - my husband has been unemployed for 16 months - turns out a male age 50 has too much experience!
Hope your wife keeps her job!
Just when I thought working couples had it made--surely they wouldn't BOTH be unemployed at the same time! But as a single person, even though my job is relatively safe (I'm in a union and I do have seniority)there's always the underlying fear. It lessened a bit when I turned 62 (so if I HAD to, I could retire) but financially, I won't be ready for that for another 7 years. I want my job to be there for me during that time.
My job is fine for now, but I we went through a round of layoffs for years ago. As a result of the layoffs I have stayed committed to my plan to pay debt and build a solid financial foundation.
If I was at risk of my job going away, I am prepared not scared.
Sorry to hear that your job is in peril.
After reading this last page and seeing that three posts added up to well over a thousand in "fun" spending I suggest buying wine for home and inviting friends. Then save every other penny you have. It could be a very long summer!
