No Raise For 2010

I met with my manager this morning and he informed me I will not be receiving a performance increase for the coming year. If you recall from my archives, I did not get a raise last year. I don't understand what happened, I worked hard and I met all my performance and objective goals. My rating for this year exceeded expectations. He mentioned I should be thankful for having a job and that my salary was already way more than the market average.

I wonder if he is aware that prices are going up, even at Walmart:

I was thinking WTF! I guess it's time to update the resume a look for a new job.

What would you do? work less? come in late and leave earlier?

Bummer! This happened to my husband several years ago. He did not get a raise for several years and I just got sick of it - he was working too hard!

Finally, a head hunter contacted him and he took another job. However, this was at the height of the economy. Things are different now.

His company now is on a hiring freeze, so I know things are still a little rough here.

His problem with the former company was his boss, so keep a watch on it, so you don't get pushed down.

Good luck with the job hunt.

I would give my employer what they pay for and that is to have expectations met not exceeded. So I would the the best I can do in my 8 hours, but after that they are on my time.

If you want to look for another job that is also an option.

I say give them 100% and still strive to meet all your goals and such.
If no one is getting a raise than chaulk it up to bad economy, if you are among one who did not get a raise, but others did, find out why.

A few of my friends have the same job and not only did they get no raise lost about 20% income (due to economy) and are still required to do same job.

It could be worse. But looking for another job is always an option as well.

I guess you need to figure out if you are above market or not.

Or, become the boss.

Good luck. Don't let them push you around.

Thanks for the comment!
It sucks that your hard work is going unrecognized. I'm probably naive, but funds are tight everywhere, maybe they really can't afford to give you a raise...
Bottom line - your work is YOU, not your company: don't lower yourself to fit in with your surroundings!

You should update your resume anyway. It's possible that you can find a job at higher pay elsewhere, but you'll never know unless you go out there and look.

However, if another company is willing to hire you at a higher rate, don't play the offer/counter offer game with your current employer. Just take the new job if it is worthy of you.

If you go back to your current employer and they want to counter offer you to get you to stay... three things happen:

1-You'll be thinking, well, if they think I'm worth this much to stay.. why didn't they give me any raises for the last 2 years.

2-They'll be thinking, well, if he's going to try to jump ship every time he doesn't get his way, is he really the kind of employee we want.

3-They WILL pile on more work and responsibility on you to justify your "pay increase". Because they have to save face with all the other employees.

So if you do find a better job with better pay... just take it.

Hey David,

That's the plan, my resume is updated and I just sent it out for a couple of jobs I found. I don't want to jump ship. I love my company but 2 years with no raise is a bit insulting...
