Burned Out On Debt

I’m getting burned out on all this debt stuff again. We seem to be going nowhere with credit card debt. Stuff keeps coming up every month and I feel like we can’t reduce the debt. One thing I’ve learned is that life goes on while you try to get out of debt. Family and friends will continue to have birthdays. Someone will get married this year or have a baby shower, so we will have to purchase gifts. Our HOA fees this year will be another $875 dollars! My car will probably break down or the dog will need expensive medications. The wife will probably need more contact lenses and I’m sure my dentist will find something wrong with my teeth that our insurance won’t cover. I’m sure the price of gas will go back up and groceries will probably continue to go up. It is all very frustrating, feels like the paychecks barely cover most of the expenses and debt payments.

The spouse and I received our raises for the year, the spouse got a 2.5% increase and I got a 5% raise that I feel I don’t deserve. Together this will bring in an extra $150 dollars a month. I know, I should be thankful that at least we got something, but something tells me will be in the same boat in the coming months, living paycheck to paycheck.

To make matters worse, a close friend told me that debt is a part of life, something you never get rid of and it stays with you forever…I don’t know what to believe anymore.

I wish $10,000 would fall off the sky in to our backyard…

I hear ya completely!!! Is there anything you can do for a quick little momentum boost to pay down some debt? Sell something? Have a garage sale?

I agree that debt reduction is difficult. It sounds like you have made progress, though. Could you do a post recapping the positive changes you have made?

I know exactly how you feel. However dont fall into trap your friend did. We dont have to live with debt and therefore we will not. Within a year or two we will be writing about being debt free and how it feels great. Keep up with good work!

Yeah, I often wish 10k would fall out of the sky... or that I would win the lottery. WOW, would that solve a lot of problems!

Anyway... hang in there! You can do it. :)

It's been that kinda year! I am exactly where you are, emotionally. The important thing is NOT to throw up your hands and simply decide NOT to control debt at all, because doing so is hopeless. That way, even more debt lies! I do think it is important for bloggers to post when they are feeling this way--if nothing else, it makes me feel like I've got company!

totally agree. in fact, my post tonight is going to be about how incredibly bummed out I am about our progress. we gotta hang in there, though - the reward will be worth the cost.

Oooh, $10k in my backyard would be absolutely wonderful!

Always remember that it could be worse... At least you know exactly how much debt you have. There are many, many others out there that have no idea how much they owe in the first place.

Take a step back and reflect on what you've accomplished so far, take a deep breath and get back in the game. If you think it's worth it to be debt free, then do it! Your friend's already given up, that doesn't mean you should too.

Quit being a pussy.

Go out and get another job if need be, but quit your whining and do something about it.

Well - cut your loses.

Change Your diet, buy cheaper presents, start save water and energy, give dog to somebody else etc.

Yes - it's brutal, but it's effective!

I myself have more credit card debt than 10 average families combined. An addiction to plastic. Quicken has a fantastic debt-reduction tool if you use that. The hard part for me is to not charge again. I'm a work in progress. Keep up the fight.
