Our electric bill this month is $300 dollars! Ouch! Our house is 2500 sq ft and the AC stays on 80 all the time. Our highest bill last summer was $216, I wonder if the rates have gone up during the last few weeks. I did catch part of this article last week from the WSJ:
“Texas had some of the cheapest power rates in the country when it zapped most of the state’s electric regulations six years ago, convinced that rollicking competition would drive prices even lower.
This summer, electricity there is some of the nation’s priciest.
Power costs are rising in the rest of the U.S., but everything is bigger in Texas: On a hot day in May, wholesale prices rose briefly to more than $4 a kilowatt hour — about 40 times the national average”
I hope they go back and regulate! We will survive but I feel really bad for people making less money and those with children. It is bad enough that gas is 4 dollars and groceries have gone up. I’m hoping the August bill will be lower, we are going to up the thermostat to 82 and make more use of our ceiling fans.
This will probably impact the debt payments for July. Discover will probably have to be paid off in August; hopefully the balance will only be around $250.
Anyone else shocked with their electricity bills?

Utilities everywhere raise the price of electricity beginning June 1st to the end of September because that is when demand is the highest (demand vs. supply). You can look at your bill and compare 3 things:
1. rate for electric supply (or generation, whatever it's referred to). It may or may not include transmission. If not, find that on your bill and add it to your supply cost per kWh.
2. number of days in billing cycle. More days = higher bills.
3.how kilowatt hours you used.
It's usually a combination of all three. I've been selling electricity for the past 3 years and the rates keep going up up up!
HI! I just got a $223 electric bill. I only budget $100, and have paid $100 or less, except last month was about $147, but $223. I can;t even pay it. I paid $123, but will have to figure out where to get the other $100 from. We keep our air on at 75, but my house is less than 1000 square feet. We turn off lights when we leave the room, and I unplus anything that pulls power when not in use (ie-microwave since we don't need that clock at night, computer, etc.) I need to have air on in day as I run an inhome daycare and would lose my clients if I did not have the air. But yikes!!! -Becky in NJ
My electric bill always scares me. Our electric bill this month is $177. While that isn't incredibly high, I feel like it should be lower. All of our bulbs are energy efficient and we usually keep our AC around 82. We used more energy this month than we did last year the same month. Last year we had a full size freezer running in the garage and now we don't. This makes me think that something is drawing too much power.
I can remember when my electric bill used to be $30.
Thanks Electric Lady! I love that we have an electric lady blogger! nice to see someone is blogging about electricty LOL.
Becky I can't believe your bill is that high, that is crazy... glad to see I'm not the only one.
Chris I think the electric company is probably just charging you more this year, its probably not your house, hang in there... one day will both be debt free!!

Wow! It must be hotter where you are. We have a similar sized house, and the bill that arrived today was for 1033 kWh and less than two-thirds your dollar amount. Same month last year was 1168 kWh. How does that compare to your bill? I track both the kWh and the $ amount in an Excel spreadsheet. It really helps me see the patterns in the bills, and helps me budget. After 4 years in the same house, I have a good idea what to expect. Last year when the electric bill seemed high, we knew something wasn't right - turned out it was the AC needed repair!
