CITI Professional

The current balance on my CITI Professional card is $1,501.20! This is now my smallest balance so according to the Dave Ramsey method I should pay this off first. The goal is to make a $1000 payment in August and then pay off the remaining balance in September.

I hope we can stick to our goal. We have a lot of expenses coming up for August. My dad’s 60th birthday will be here in three weeks so I will probably have to buy him something nice. We are still expecting some medical bills and my wife has some back to school shopping to do (she’s a teacher). We also need to pay off Discover and cut up the cards, I am tired of putting stuff on them, but stuff keeps coming up.

I swear, feels like debt and expenses will never end, maybe I should rename my blog “Living With Debt” since it seems it will never go away.

In America today, carrying some debt is unavoidable, and even desirable, for most households. But between mortgages, car payments, and credit cards, many Americans find themselves over their heads -- unable to dig out from under a growing debt burden that consumes an ever growing portion of their resources.

The average U.S. household now has credit card debt of more than $9,300. Credit card companies have made running up that balance deceptively convenient. What's lost when you're on that spending spree is the realization that paying off your debt can be costly, in terms of both cash on hand and your overall financial health.

Where in the world did the above commenter come from? The way I see it is if you're going to get rid of 2/3 of your smaller card, go for it! I'd throw 1k at a card if I had it laying around. Your debt can't go away if it sticks around. At some point you will have all these paid off, and the money you used to pay them can go into a savings account to cover what you needed the cards for in the first place.

Great job on tackling the debt! A couple of suggestions though, you made a comment about things always coming up. Maybe instead of making a large credit card payment, you could fully fund your small emergency fund. Also, you've mentioned before that you don't have a budget. I know, it can be a huge pain, but it can really save you when it comes to those unexpected expenses and it might help you rope in the spending a little and pay off the debt faster. Just a suggestion. Good luck!
